Trinket Collector
If you are on social media at all I am sure you have seen the new craze of the moment. Sonny Angels. The little naked babies from Japan that are sweeping the internet. Even the New York Times did an article on them, Taking Comfort in Sonny Angels. Not to toot my own horn but I have been on this train for a while so now that I have to search high and low and pay double for this little babies, I am not a fan of their recent popularity. I digress, the rise of the "trinket girlies" has inspired me to write a little bit about the collecting of these little trinkets/toys, how they take you back to childhood, and how its just plain fun.
As kids we all had our little collections whether it was rocks you found in your front yard or seashells on your beach vacation. It's just in your nature as a kid, you find something cool you want more and you want a collection full of your favorites. So why do we lose that joy as we grow up. You can still be an adult and have adult responsibilities while having a small source of joy in some sort of collection. Reliving the magic of discovery and the tactile pleasure of holding something unique to you and your interests. Even if it's not toys like I am using as an example above. It can be antiques or coins or anything really. Collecting is just a way to disconnect from the stress of adult life and finding joy in something simple you don't have to think much about.
Collecting trinkets is a playful, meaningful way to reconnect with your inner child and add joy to everyday life. My personal favorites to collect are Sonny's, Calico Critters, Littlest Pet Shops, any blind bag toy really. It may sound stupid but the hunt and excitement of finding the character you are looking for really does give me a surge of happiness, which is a bit embarrassing, but hey... I accept it. They are exciting to me because I think they remind me of my childhood, not that I had a bad childhood by any means but it feels comforting to go back to it sometimes since the real adult world is so overwhelming and stressful at times. It's also fun to build a community of people who have the same interest as you, trading trinkets, and bonding over a shared fixation. Sometimes, it’s the smallest things that hold the biggest pieces of our hearts even if they seem stupid to other people.
